G.I. Joe - Don't Call Him A Doll
In 1959 the Barbie doll became available to American girls and their trend-conscious parents, and the phrase “fashion doll” was created. Fashion dolls became a member of the ever-expanding varieties of dolls from rag dolls to china dolls which posessed one basic characteristic – they were all for girls. Another great alternative is the Gamo Air Rifles.
In 1964, Hasbro released a brand of military-clothed figures meant to be a boy-friendly variant of the Barbie doll. These were never referred to as dolls, even in the initial promotion, basically since they were so obviously meant for boys. The expression “action figure” was used, and to this very day a person-shaped toy which was obviously designed for fighting was described as an action figure.
The initial G.I. Joe action figures were more specifically four different figures outfitted as fighting men of the four branches of the military. The term G.I. means Government Issue, which grew to be a common term for U.S. Soldiers throughout the Second World War.
Every G.I. Joe was sold with a uniform and hat for the relevant branch of service. All the figures furthermore could use a full line of equipment specific to their branch of service; for instance, the infantryman would use an optional rifle and web gear which were sold either separately or one piece of a bigger set. Each G.I. Joe figure had a World War II theme, even though their outfits and equipment were representative of the recently fought Korean War. Another great product to consider is the Gamo Air Rifles.
The original action figures were the identical height as the Barbie dolls in those days; 11 1/2 inches.By the1970s, the G.I. Joes had came with a new hand style which could grasp their own gear including rifles and rocket launchers. The action figures had then shrunk to 8" tall to compete in the quickly expanding action figure market which was at that time heavily populated by the Marvel Comics superhero action figures. In yet another shot aimed at their sudden competition, the figures were now called "Super G.I. Joe". During the 80s, Joe shrank for a second time, to 3 3/4 inches, and then increased to 12 inches all over again in 1991.
A happy effect of all this expanding, minimizing, re-naming and the periodic revival of older product lines is that you may currently buy a G.I. Joe action figure in almost any size imaginable. The normal action figure is today a 6” figure and a lot of characters sell for less than $10, however some 12” collector characters are for sale, and there is still a 16” Duke figure that comes with an accelerator suit which you can buy for $30.
Naturally, the number of accessories and vehicles has expanded exponentially, given that we at this point have just about 50 years of weaponry to draw from as well as any futuristic weapons that the designers at Hasbro may fantasize about. Millions of school boys – and a few theoretically mature ones, also – appreciate fighting and winning wars with their G.I. Joe action figures. Just don’t call them dolls. Another nice option is the Gamo Air Rifles.
